Summary:The geology, geochemistry and associated mineralizations of Svecokarelian granitic rocks were studied at 22 target locations, 10 of which were predominantly molybdenite or chalcopyrite-bearing occurrences. The host rocks belong to the synorogenic age group of 1850-1900 m.y., i.e. the same age as Svecokarelian mafic plutonic rocks and metavolcanic rocks. The batholiths have dioritic or tonalitic margins with granodioritic centres; geochemically they are calc-alkaline and have I-type characteristics. The mineralizations include Mo-Cu, Mo, Cu, Cu-Au and Cu-W associations; in addition to molybdenite and chalcopyrite, major ore minerals include magnetite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite and scheelite. The occurrences are either stockwork type or quartz or tourmaline breccia type with minor disseminations. Wall-rock alteration includes sericitization, propylitization, silicification and potassic alteration. Systematic sampling of one sample per 2-0.5 km2 seems sufficient to identify potential ore occurrences; Cu gives broad and highly contrasted primary haloes. On a local scale, 25-100 samples per km2 is sufficient to guide exploration; the most useful of 35 elements analysed are Cu, Mo, Au, Zn, K and Si. [R.A.H.]
