Summary:The central Moroccan volcanic association is composed mostly of basanites, nephelinites and phonolites. The modal abundance of clinopyroxene, the presence of nepheline and nosean and the scarcity of olivine are the major petrographic characteristics of the province. The chemical composition of the lavas indicates that peralkaline types are frequent, and that total iron is usually higher than in typical alkali basalt provinces. These characteristics, together with the absence of ultrabasic inclusions, easily distinguish this association from the neighbouring contemporaneous basaltic Middle Atlas province. However, they clearly indicate similarities with the nephelinite-phonolite provinces described in Kenya and Uganda. (Authors' abstract) [C.N.]
