The influence of crystallographic orientation and grain boundary migration on microstructural and textural evolution in an S-C mylonite

Summary:The analysis of the subgrain and dislocation sub-structure present in grains in different crystallographic orientations within a domainal S-C mylonite is reported. The study reveals a range in subgrain size and development which is related to the crystal orientation of the host grain in the mylonite. Subgrains in grains with easy slip orientations contain large subgrains while grains in more complex slip orientations contain small subgrains. The dislocation densities preserved in the mylonite are extremely variable, even within individual subgrains and may be the result of a late stress pulse. The analysis indicates that grain boundary migration was an important process in the microstructural evolution, initiating the selective removal of some orientations and thus influencing the final crystallographic preferred orientation present in different domains. The data collected are also used to assess the potential stability and preservation of microstructures during the non steady-state deformation expected at the end of a deformation event.
