Summary:Being the Mn-dominant analogue of sainfeldite, the new mineral villyaellenite, ideally H2(Mn,Ca)5(AsO4)4.4H2O, is seen occurring with fluckite, picropharmacolite, native arsenic and pharmacolite at the Sainte-Marie aux Mines in France. Colourless to bright pink, euhedral crystals are tabular along (100) and elongated parallel to (001). Forms present in the small crystals measuring = or <0.3 mm are (100), (011), (010) and rarely (001). Whereas hardness could not be measured, the streak is white. Chemical composition determined by microprobe is CaO 13.58, MnO 22.40, As2O5 52.99, H2O (TGA) 11.42, = 100.39. The crystal system is monoclinic, space group C2/c with a 18.55, b 9.52, c 10.01 A, beta 97°; Z = 4. Strongest lines in the X-ray powder diffraction pattern are 3.297(100), 8.476(90), 3.132(60), 4.606(50), 4.761(40), 3.811(40), 3.025(40) A. D 3.20 (meas.) and 3.24 g/cm3 (calc.). Villyaellenite has 2Valpha 76°; alpha 1.660(2), beta 1.670(2), gamma 1.676(2); orientation alpha = b beta : c approx 30° in the obtuse angle beta . The mineral has been named in the honour of Dr. Villy Aellen, Director of the Museum of Natural History, Geneva. [W.S.]
