Summary:Nearly 1000 organic sulphur compounds (OSC) have been identified in the aromatic fraction of an oil sample from Rozel Point, USA; many of these compounds were previously unknown, have high molecular weights and their structures may be related to bio- or geochemical precursors. Sixty-seven of these compounds are drawn and listed in the Appendix. The subfractions of the aromatic fraction were analysed by GC using flame ionization, flame photometric detection (FPD), GC-MS, NMR and desulphurization experiments. The C skeletons of the OSC identified have the same structures as hydrocarbons from geological materials: isoprenoid hydrocarbons, steranes, n- alkanes, and the OSC may be products of S incorporation into specific precursors.
