Summary:The Covide pegmatite (northern Portugal) exhibits a new example of quartz-albite-K-feldspar layering. A magmatic petrogenetic model is proposed with double diffusive processes interacting in a temperature gradient allowing the simultaneous growth of millimetre-thick albite crystals in horizontal 'floating layers'. Each cell, forming a unit between two consecutive boundary layers, evolves as a closed sytem with centripetal, oriented crystallization. The layers formed in the liquid magma. [K.v.G.]
