Hydrogen and oxygen isotope variations in the High Himalaya peraluminous Manaslu leucogranite; evidence for heterogeneous sedimentary source

Summary:This study presents H and O isotope data on the Manaslu granite, its country rocks and paragneisses: the granite is located in the High Himalaya of central Nepal and was emplaced between the Tibetan Slab gneisses and the overlying unmetamorphosed Tibetan sedimentary series. For the granite, delta Dmusc ranges -70 to -85per mille and delta 18O from 10.9 to 12.8per mille, which are compatible with a closed-system evolution and absence of pervasive post-magmatic alteration. O-, Sr- and Nd-isotope compositions of the granite magma indicate that they were inherited from their values in the paragneisses at the time of melting. The delta D values of the granite, by contrast, are not directly inherited from the paragneisses, but were modified at the magmatic stage. The ranges for O- and Sr-isotopes are not identical with the different High Himalaya plutons or Cainozoic North Himalaya plutons, and the reasons for these differences are discussed. [R.K.H.]
