Summary:New K/Ar ages and petrochemical data for selected volcanoes indicate significant time-space variations in the 80 km-wide, predominantly calc-alkaline volcanic belt of Ecuador and southern Colombia. The variations are interpreted as resulting from the subduction of the Carnegie Ridge anomalous oceanic crust, which began underthrusting approx 6 m.y. ago. [C.H.D.]
