Volcanism on Gough Island; a revised stratigraphy

Summary:Four main periods of volcanic activity on the island are recognized from new field evidence and K/Ar dating: eruption of the Older Basalt group which ranges in age from 2.5 to 0.52 m.y., the intrusion of aegirine-augite trachyte plugs (0.8-0.47 m.y.), voluminous trachyte extrusion (0.30-0.12 m.y.), and finally eruption of the Edinburgh Basalt (0.20-0.13 m.y.). The Older Basalt group consists of an early phase of pillow basalts and hyaloclastites, when the island emerged from below sea-level, followed by subaerial aa-type lava flows and dyke intrusion which contributed to forming a large shield-type of volcanic island.
