Summary:The isotopic composition of Os and Os concentrations were measured on nodules and ferromanganese crusts forming on serpentinized peridotites from the Atlantic and Indian oceans. The objective was to test the hypothesis that if alteration of ultramafic rocks releases Os to sea-water, then ferromanganese crusts forming on serpentinized peridotites could record the release of such Os. Major-elements were also determined on these crusts and on manganese nodules previously analysed for Os. Major-element concentrations and Os isotope data are presented. The average 187Os/186Os of the crusts is the same as that of the Mn nodules from the Atlantic floor and this alone does not disprove the hypothesis. Variations in the 187Os/186Os ratios of the Mn nodules are discussed; large-scale variations result from the impression of intense local Os input from continental and oceanic sources, while fine variations may be the result of mixing of constant, fine meteoritic Os with Os precipitated from sea-water.
