Summary:An introduction to the theory and practice of IR and Raman spectroscopies is provided, particularly as applied to mineralogical problems. Vibrational spectroscopy is a useful technique for work on minerals and can be applied to a wide range of studies. A complete and reliable data base of mineral spectra is essential but there is a need for many more experimental data on well-defined mineral series. It is hoped that interest in the vibrational spectra of minerals will provide the impetus for development of the tools necessary for studying the dynamics of complex mineral structures in a non-empirical way.
