Summary:The geological and volcanological relationships of the Roccamonfina volcano, 140 km SE of Rome, are summarized. Isotopic ages obtained by the 40Ar-39Ar and K-Ar methods are presented of 7 samples of the shoshonitic series, and 7 samples of the leucite basanite and leucitite series. The results give ages ranging 0.656-0.096 m.y. for the shoshonite series, and 1.03(?)-0.053 for the leucite basanite and leucitite series samples. These ages indicate that the products of the two series were extruded at least 0.7-0.1 m.y. ago. It is concluded that Roccamonfina was active between 1.5 and 0.05 m.y. ago, and that the isotopic ages agree with the stratigraphic evidence. [R.K.H.]
