Summary:The volcanic-detrital group of the Vilaine river area (southern Brittany, France), consists mainly of mica schists which display two steps of metamorphism, with corresponding deformation seen through development of shearplanes with accompanying lineations. Embedded within the same group basic rocks of calc-alkaline to magnesian compositions occur. Using 30 amphibole compositions, the authors describe the progressive changes in the mineral assemblages in both the metamorphic phases. Whereas the first phase is characterized by high-P/medium-T to high-P/high-T, the second is a distinct retrogradational phase with gradations from high-P/high-T to low-P/medium. [T.W.S.]
