Summary:The area, constituting a small segment of the India Shield is made up of the Delhi, Aravalli and Bhilwara supergroups spanning a time scale of 740 to >2500 m.y. It is an important mineral province and has a striking expression in the Bouguer gravity map of India as a large NE-SW high of approx 80 milligalls. This anomaly had been explained in terms of a major horst, which in fact supports an earlier view of Fermor. In order to investigate this structure further, a systematic gravity survey was carried out during 1976- 1982. This involved the establishment of >2000 well-distributed stations over an area of 140 000 sq. km. The resulting residual gravity map is presented and discussed. [J.M.H.]
