Lithostratigraphy and structure of the Old Red Sandstone of the northern Dingle Peninsula, Co. Kerry, Southwest Ireland

Summary:Detailed descriptions of the geology, sedimentology and petrography of the northern Dingle Peninsula are provided, earlier work discussed, and an explanation for the complicated geology, including an outline of the tectonic evolution of the area, is offered. The Dun an Oir fault separates domains of very different lithostratigraphy, so the area S of this fault is first described and then compared with the geology of the domain N of the fault. In the N of the peninsula, where the Feohanagh anticline is not faulted, there is a further variation in the stratigraphy; this area is treated separately. The apparently oldest non-marine sequence in the NW of the peninsula contrasts with that of the late Silurian-early Devonian Dingle group to the S. The N sequence, renamed the Smerwick group, evolved independently of the Dingle group in a separate depositional basin. A tectonic model suggests that the Smerwick group evolved in a small extensional half-graben on the N margin of the Munster Basin, and implies that this group is late Devonian. [R.K.H.]
