Reconnaissance geochronology, tectonothermal evolution, and regional significance of the middle Proterozoic Choma-Kalomo block, southern Zambia

Summary:New isotopic data suggest that the Choma-Kalomo batholith is a composite intrusion emplaced from approx 1345 to 1200 m.y. ago. Folding possibly occurred at approx 1230 or 1200 m.y. Isotopic evidence records post-deformational cooling followed by subsequent low-grade Pan-African overprinting along the S margin of the Zambezi belt. An earlier phase of deformation in the Choma-Kalomo block at approx 1345 m.y. is much younger than early Proterozoic orogenesis in adjacent terrains to the E, indicating that a major Precambrian discontinuity separates these regions, but it is similar in age to events in the Irumide belt in Zambia, which suggests that these two belts are part of a single, originally continuous, middle Proterozoic mobile belt. Continuity between the Choma-Kalomo block and broadly coeval terrains to the SW also seems likely: all these areas are considered to form parts of a middle Proterozoic orogenic province lying W of the Kaapvaal and Zimbabwe cratons.
