Summary:Studies conducted for several years on granitic rocks have led to a general consensus regarding the typology of magmatic granite associations and to the discovery of distinct and often independent methodological approaches. The approaches are based on discrimination criteria, and on petrographic, chemico- mineralogical or mineralogical features. The production of the geological map of France at the 1:50 000 scale, where the majority of the surveys are being made in crystalline terrains, must take into account changing ideas on plutonic rocks. Through the classification proposed the simple determination of coloured minerals and/or the chemical composition of biotite in many cases enables rapid and certain discrimination between the main families of granitic rocks.
