Summary:The Mount Copeland syenite gneiss is a subconcordant alkaline igneous intrusion within metasedimentary rocks that overlie early Proterozoic crystalline basement in the Monashee complex. The gneiss contains zircons of two ages: 740 +- 36 m.y.-old relict grains and cores, interpreted as original igneous phenocrysts, and 59 +- 1 m.y.-old metamorphic grains and overgrowths, which form the bulk of the zircons in the rock. The widespread growth of metamorphic zircon about 60 m.y. ago is suggested to coincide with the final stages of late Cretaceous-Palaeocene metamorphism of the Omineca Belt. [T.F.]
