Summary:This paper briefly reviews the contributions to this thematic issue. Most papers describe new field data in their local tectonic context. Uniform and justified caution emerges in speculating on models invoking plate tectonics for the early Palaeozoic of the Welsh basin.(This paper and those of the following 15 abstracts form the Spring Thematic Issue of this journal, and comprise contributions to the Joint Meeting of the Tectonic Studies Group of the Geological Society and the British Sedimentological Research Group on 'Sedimentation and Tectonics of the Welsh Basin', editors: W.R. Fitches & N. H. Woodcock. The meeting was held on the 10-14th April, 1986). [R.K.H.]
