Summary:The manganese nodules have no concentric growth structure and are composed of a rhodochrosite core and birnessite mantle. The chemical composition is SiO2 7.38, TiO2 0.06, Al2O3 1.62, Fe2O 1.38, MnO 65.09, MgO 0.33, CaO 1.30, Na2O 0.10, K2O 0.74, P2O5 0.27%, Ni 19, Cu 940, Ba 3300 ppm. The authors prefer a hydrogeneous precipitation origin for these nodules in the hemipelagic ocean or continental-arc slope. [T.W.]
