Summary:The Costelloe Murvey leucogranite which occurs both at the margins and in the centre of the Galway granite has a high rate of heat production (5-7 mu W/m3) and high U (10-17 ppm) and Th (30- 45 ppm). Microprobe analyses are reported for five thorites, monazite, uraninite, three zircons and four unidentified phases rich in U, Th and REE. The LREE are strongly partitioned into monazite and Ce-bearing phases; the HREE are hosted by thorite, zircon and the U-Th-Ti-Nb-bearing phases; the uraninite contains high levels of middle REE; three of the zircons have Y2O3 >7%. This granite has undergone hydrochemical alteration, which may have been responsible for the redistribution of these elements. [R.A.H.]
