Summary:Using K/Ar methods, a geochronological study was carried out on rocks of magmatic origin in the Monte Cinto group, N Corsica. The zone so far explored comprises the central and high valley of Asco, which extends from Filosorma to the west and the margins of Balagna to the north. The rocks examined belong to the two Corsican cycles of Permian volcanism and to the granitic rocks which intrude the volcanic rocks. Weakly metamorphosed rocks have also been studied which outcrop along the Asco valley, which are classified as porphyritic rocks. The black ignimbrites of Monte Estrano are assigned to the first cycle. The volcanic rocks of the second cycle include the pyroclastic rocks of Giunta and the red and purplish blue ignimbrites. The granitic rocks sampled include alkaline amphibole granites of the Bonifato Forest and the granite of the Popolasca massif. The results surprisingly indicate an Alpine age rather than a Hercynian one, experimental values ranging from 30 to 60 m.y. Only the Monte Estrano ignimbrites show an apparent age between 100 and 120 m.y. [J.M.H.]
