Summary:Most of the Irish Carboniferous Pb-Zn deposits occur within mixed basal carbonates and clastic rocks (the 'Navan group') or within the Waulsortian facies and their time equivalents. These are variants of the sediment-hosted massive sulphide class, but there are some features typical of Mississippi Valley-type (MVT) deposits- geopetal and colloform textures, abundant sulphide brecciation, and stratabound fracture development. The style of mineralization depends on whether the host-rocks are carbonates or argillaceous. The Zn-Pb deposits of Kildare are hosted, in part, by rocks above the Waulsortian facies. Unlike the other deposits, mineralization occurs in angular breccia zones which cut lithified rocks, and there are many MVT features. There is no clear genetic relationship between any of these deposits and the basal Carboniferous copper deposits further south. [R.E.]
