Summary:The Keel deposit, discovered in 1962, occurs as fracture fill, breccia matrix and disseminations within Lower Carboniferous basal clastics rocks, localized on the ENE-trending Keel fault system. Extensional movement on this system caused preferential fracturing and brecciation of more competent units, which created space for sulphide precipitation from fluids passing upwards along the fault. The major mineral, sphalerite, has a Cd:Zn ratio of 1:60. Ag-rich tetrahedrite occurs as minute inclusions within sphalerite and as a replacement of galena. A second small deposit, of stratiform style, occurs nearby at Garrycam. It is situated within Waulsortian Reef mudbank limestones on the hanging wall side of the Keel fault. Studies of mineral distribution and textures suggest that ponding of sulphates and sulphides occurred in a sea-floor depression between reef mounds. The Keel-type mineralization represents a feeder system to this deposit. [R.E.]
