Cementing halite in Triassic Bunter Sandstone (Tonder, Southwest Denmark) as a result of hyperfiltration of brines

Summary:Samples of cores from the Bunter Sandstone formation of the Tonder structure have been carefully prepared without ingress of fresh water. The presence of cementing halite has been proved by chemical analysis and studies of these samples under a microscope. Computer log analysis combined with core analysis show that the cementing halite exists mainly in the sandstone layers of the Upper Bunter sand unit. The depositional environments of the Bunter Sandstone formation are outlined. It is argued that the cementing halite formed as a result of hyperfiltration of the saturated formation brines through low-permeability layers of shale. This process took place during the emplacement of nitrogen gas in the Upper Bunter sand unit late in the diagenetic history of the sandstone. [P.Br.]
