Age of the Richmond Gulf Group and implications for rifting in the Trans-Hudson Orogen, Canada

Summary:The Aphebian Richmond Gulf group of the E coast of Hudson Bay is a fluvial sandstone sequence containing basalt flows. It was shed E from a rifting-related thermal dome situated in the present central part of Hudson Bay. Sandstone from the base of the group contains a uraniferous diagenetic apatite cement, which is shown to be approx 2025 m.y. old by U-Pb and Pb-Pb isochron analysis. The same data provide an older age for the deposition of the Richmond Gulf, Nastapoka and Belcher groups, and also date the formation of the Richmond Gulf graben, an aulacogen related to the initial rifting of the Trans-Hudson orogen.
