Summary:Results of a study of distinctive lithologic associations of amphibolites, ultramafic gneisses, granitic gneisses and metalliferous quartzites in three areas NW and SE of the Brevard shear zone in the west Georgia Piedmont, support their interpretation as a coherent lithologic suite, the Ropes Creek assemblage, contained within a single thrust sheet. The assemblage probably represents the remnants of a disrupted, deformed, and metamorphosed ophiolite (or ophiolites) formed off the margin of North America prior to closure of the Iapetus Ocean. Tabulated major and trace-element data, plots, and diagrams are included in the discussion of the geochemical features of the component lithologies. [M.S.]
