Summary:The study area is on the E flank of the axial trough of the Gregory Rift, Kenya. Three main tectonic trends define several regions of Miocene to Pleistocene volcanic and sedimentary rocks overlying metamorphics. Lakes Bogoria, in the N, and Baringo, in the S, are the two main basins. Studies were made of the sedimentary and biogenic facies in the two basins, which show completely different mineral and organic sedimentation, Baringo being a holomictic fresh-water lake and Bogoria a saline, alkaline lake, with a meromictic regime and high hydrothermal activity. The evolution of the half-graben over the last 30 000 yr is interpreted in terms of climatic variations. [R.E.S.]
