Summary:The Precambrian Shield of Canada is subdivided into five major Archaean provinces. The chapter concentrates on the Superior Province which covers much of Quebec, Ontario and part of northern central USA, and is separated from the Rae and Hearne provinces by the 1800 m.y. old Hudsonian orogeny. The Rae and Hearne provinces are separated from the Slave Province to the NW by the Great Slave Lake shear zone. The Nain Province comprises the western part of the North Atlantic craton, along the coastal strip of Labrador. The main topics discussed are: the Superior Province, granite-greenstone terrains (platform sequences, mafic plain volcanism, arc volcanism, and pull-apart basins), mafic-ultramafic intrusions (platform terrains, arc terrains), the Slave Province, the Rae Province, and post-tectonic dykes.
