Summary:The effects of confining P/normal stress and T on shear fracture energy of rocks have been studied with intact samples of sandstones. Both the nominal values of the shear fracture energy Gnom, calculated using triaxial data at constant confining P and the inferred values of G for the loading path satisfying constant normal stress, show that they at first increase then decrease with increasing confining P/normal stress, and they decrease with increasing T. Data are presented for two German sandstones; results show that the fracture energy mainly depends on the stress drop during the breakdown process at both different P and different T, and in different loading paths.
