Summary:The Munni Munni complex hosts the most significant deposit of PGE mineralization located to date in an Australian layered mafic- ultramafic intrusive. The complex is 45 km S of Karratha in the West Pilbara region, Western Australia. The Archaean layered mafic complex at Munni Munni intrudes older granites and metasediments of the Pilbara block, and is unconformably overlain by sediments and volcanics of the Mt Bruce supergroup. The Munni Munni complex covers an area of approx 225 km2, is > or = 5.5 km thick and is composed of a lower ultramafic series overlain by a thick gabbroic series. The PGE-Cu-Ni mineralization occurs immediately below the gabbro-ultramafic contact in a porphyritic websterite. A persistent layer of PGE mineralization has been delineated by drilling over strike length of 7.5 km and to a depth of 600 m. The mineralized layer averages 2.5 m true thickness and typically grades 2.9 g/t Pt + Pd + Au, 0.2% Ni and 0.3% Cu. [J.M.H.]
