Summary:Beta-Mg2SiO4 is likely to be an important phase within the transition zone ofthe Earth's mantle at a depth of 400-500 km. Recent calculations have suggested that beta -Mg2SiO4 might accept OH groups into its crystal structure and that the phase could be a source for H2O in the mantle. [J.A.Z.]
