Summary:A model for the Middle Devonian-Upper Carboniferous facies in the area is proposed. A shelf extending to the S across most of SW England developed into a basin; argillites and carbonates accumulated; and flysch and paralic sediments were deposited. It is suggested that the whole of central SW England forms part of a southerly-derived thrust and nappe terrain. [R.E.S.]
