The geochemistry of rare earth elements in groundwater from the Carnmenellis area, Southwest England

Summary:Analyses are presented of major and trace (including REE) elements in selected shallow groundwaters from the Carnmenellis area, including water samples from shallow wells, boreholes, streams and adits in the Carnmenellis granite and metasediments. Shallow groundwaters from this area represent recently recharged waters of mainly low salinity, and their major elements are controlled by water-rock interaction. Thus waters from the granite are typically of Na- (and K) or Na-Ca type, whilst those from the metasedimentary envelope are of Na-Ca-Mg type. Chloride dominates anions in granite waters, and Cl and HCO3 predominate in the metasediment waters. Chondrite-normalized REE from both sources of groundwater show that they are LREE-enriched relative to HREE with slight Eu anomalies; the patterns reflect those of the host rocks and are due to water-rock interaction involving mainly enriched minerals. A negative Ce anomaly in groundwaters from the metasediments compared with those from the granite may be due to water-rock interaction involving Ce-depleted minerals, e.g. carbonates. [R.K.H.]
