Summary:A zone of pre-Malm mafic and ultramafic igneous rocks and associated deep-sea sediments exists within the Rhodope-Pontide fragment of N Turkey. These rocks have already been interpreted as ophiolitic remnants of the Palaeo-Tethys, but no detailed petrological descriptions were given. Petrological data on these rocks show that they are indeed ophiolites and differ widely from the Neo-Tethyan ophiolites in Turkey in terms of age, tectonic setting and history of metamorphism. In addition to the 'normal ophiolites', the importance of the abundant 'metapelite-metabasic' associations in detecting former suture zones is underlined. (Authors' abstract) [A.W.H.]
