Summary:The stress state is heterogeneous and apparently unpredictable. Characterization of in situ stress state requires the determination of stress at separate locations with spatial and temporal extrapolation. Representation of the lithosphere as a non- equilibrium, dissipative, dynamic system is consistent with observations of stress state and fluctuation of crustal displacements. This system is also consistent with perturbation experiments on cores and is driven in part by stored strain energy. Current practice is discussed and includes the nature and origin of stress and its determination at a point location, and the characterization of stress distribution. A non-linear systems perspective includes a thermo- dynamic model and results on perturbation tests on core samples.
