Summary:The KTB (Kontinentales Tiefbohr) deep drilling project allows the direct measurement at mid-crustal depth of the absolute magnitude of crustal stresses, the uniformity of stress changes with depth, the influence of pore P on stress magnitude, and the size and orientation of tectonic stresses near the brittle-ductile transition zone. Stress magnitudes to 3 km depth agree with Byerlee's law. However, extrapolating these data to mid-crustal depths includes problems, e.g. plate boundaries move at shear stress levels lower than those predicted by that law; the state of stress is closely related to plate-driving processes and it is impossible to predict the relation between pore-P and stress size at the brittle-ductile transition zone.
