Volcanic hazard assessment of Guagua Pichincha (Ecuador) based on past behaviour and numerical models

Summary:This active crater lies only approx 10 km W of Quito, the capital of Ecuador. Records show that human communities have been repeatedly affected by volcanic eruptions in this region. Tephrostratigraphic studies and 14C datings show that the eruptive history of Pichincha in the last 40 000 yr has been characterized mostly by explosive eruptions with an average frequency of one every few centuries. These eruptions produced relatively small volumes of dacitic pumice fallout and pyroclastic surge and flow. Eruptions of the last 10 000 yr have also included lava dome growth and lateral blasts by dome explosions. On the evidence, the explosive eruptions of 970 and 1660 A.D. were chosen as those representing the maximum phenomena to be expected in the case of reactivation. The eruptionbehaviour has been simulated by models on digitized topographic maps, and the results have been used to delineate the areas of risk. [R.E.S.]
