Summary:Large (>= 5 cm in diameter) garnet porphyroblasts occur in leucosomes in low- to medium-P granulite-facies metapelites in the Broken Hill area and can be accounted for as the consequence of crossing an incongruent melting reaction, with the garnet as a reaction product. The melt occurs around the garnet as a diffusion- controlled texture due to the difficulty of nucleating garnet, with a consequence that melt segregation is a chemical rather than a physical process.
