Summary:Small scale (approx 60 mu m) delta34S variations, between -1.0 and +7.1 per mille, have been measured by ion microprobe in one hydrothermal chimney from the EPR at 21 degrees N. Both the outer rim (limit between the chalcopyrite and bornite zones) and the inner part of the chimney are enriched in 34S. These zones also have the highest Se contents (<= 2000 ppm). The correlated delta34S and Se variations reflect incorporation in the sulphides of variable amounts of locally derived sea-water S. Changes in T and variable amounts of sulphate reduction are thought to be the dominant processes controlling the delta34S variations of the chimney, rather than variations in 34S or Se contents of vent fluids.
