Summary:The Bergslagen ore belt consists of a complex of volcano-sedimentary and plutonic rock units, 1900-1840 m.y. old, which formed in a rift setting. The volcano-sedimentary unit is divided into three: the lower and middle leptite, and upper leptite and slate groups. Development of the complex began with the extrusion of felsic volcanics which was followed by rifting and deposition in branching basins. Finally the rocks of the upper group were deposited in rift phase basins. The geochemistry of the rocks supports the rift tectonic setting. Mn and sulphide ores and associated metasomatic alteration are related to widespread sub-seafloor hydrothermal metamorphism related to convection systems driven by the heat of the various rift-phase mafic and felsic intrusions and extrusions. After the rift phase there was a period of tectonic compression and the intrusion of the Hyttsjo gabbro-tonalite suite at approx 1840 m.y. [R.E.S.]
