Summary:The seismic P-wave velocity reduction of approx 4% in the entire area underlying the Tertiary volcanic complex of the Vogelsberg, Hesse, Germany, down to a depth of approx 70 km can be explained by intensive fracturing of the lithosphere during magma eruption. [K.v.G.]
