Summary:Petrogenetic grids are classically used to schematize phase relationships in the P-T plane. Up to now, only systems with (C + 3) phases, where C is the number of chemical components, are well known from a theoretical angle. One of the difficulties for the use of systems of (C + 4) phases concerns the arrangement of stability levels for the different in-, uni- and divariant equilibria in the P-T plane. This work leads to an inventory of all the stability sequences that are thermodynamically allowed along univariant lines. A generalization is proposed for systems with (C + N) phases, whatever N. A 'stability rule' is obtained. [M.L.]
