Conditions of origin of kimberlites in West Greenland; new evidence from the Sarfartoq and Sukkertoppen regions

Summary:Minerals in a garnet lherzolite nodule and macrocrysts in kimberlite were analysed by microprobe. T from the nodule were in the range 1110-1137°C, and P are estimated at >><[dollar]I> 50 kbar. Calculated T for the macrocrysts was 1309°C. T calculated for other kimberlites in West Greenland lie in the range 1034-1078°C (40-50 kbar). The T variation may reflect the setting of the kimberlites in Archaean and Proterozoic terrains. Assuming a common geotherm of 40 mW/m2, all the kimberlites originated within the diamond stability field. [W.S.W.]
