Age and origin of Late Jurassic and Paleocene granitoids, Nelson Batholith, southern British Columbia

Summary:Field mapping and petrography, geochemical and isotopic analyses, and U-Pb dating of zircon and titanite have shown that late Jurassic (158.9 +- 0.6 m.y.) biotite granite and Palaeocene (61 +- 1 m.y.) quartz monzonite are exposed in the Nelson batholith. The biotite granite is isotopically similar to other Middle Jurassic granites and provides evidence for magmatism into the Oxfordian. The emplacement of Palaeocene quartz monzonite may provide an explanation for the young 40Ar/39Ar ages and distorted isobaric surfaces in the S Nelson batholith. Palaeocene granitic rocks from the Nelson batholith-Valhalla complex and the Adams River area, S Omineca belt, have differing Pb isotopic signatures, suggesting that these suites were derived from different crustal sources.
