Summary:The SW part of this suture is characterized by a distinct litho- stratigraphic and geochemical zonation from N to S. The S part of the suture zone is underlain by the Ariab volcanic arc which is separated from the adjacent Oshib ophiolite melange to the N by a major thrust. Basalts of the Oshib ophiolite complex vary from N to S from typical MORB through OIB to boninitic lavas. The volcanic sequences of the Ariab island arc consist of minor tholeiitic and major calc-alkaline intermediate to felsic volcanic and plutonic rocks. Subduction-related calc-alkaline granitic rocks (approx 810 m.y.) were intruded into the N margin of the 890-840 m.y. old Haya terrain along the S boundary of the Nakasib suture zone. All the evidence indicates that the Nakasib ocean basin was consumed in the late Proterozoic by a southerly dipping subduction zone. [R.A.H.]
