Fission track dating obsidians in central and northern Anatolia

Summary:Twenty obsidian samples from this area were dated by this method. Split samples analysed in two different laboratories gave consistent results. Data presented apply to three volcanic fields and are summarized as follows: Orta-Sakaeli (N Anatolia) 21-23 m.y.; Gollu Dagi dome complex near Ciftlik (central Anatolia) 1.33- 0.98 m.y.; and Acigol caldera (central Anatolia) with three age groups: 1) precaldera eruptions (Bogazkoy) 0.18-0.15 m.y.; 2) formation of the large intracaldera dome Kocadag-Taskesiktepe at approx 0.08 m.y. (uncorrected 'apparent' age of 0.075 m.y.); and 3) Acigol peripheral obsidian domes with plateau ages of 0.020 and 0.019 m.y., and an additional uncorrected age of 0.018 m.y., which form a distinct age group. These fission track parameters discriminate between the various obsidian sources of prehistoric obsidian artifacts. [R.E.S.]
