Summary:Undeformed and unaltered Proterozoic dolerite dykes in the Archaean gneiss and intervening mobile belt retain subophitic textures and mineral assemblages. The pyroxenes retain highly variable Ca, Mg and Fe contents. In contrast neighbouring dykes of supposedly Tertiary age comprise compositionally uniform pigeonite- augite pairs. The differences between these two pyroxene assemblages probably results from differences in the oxygen fugacity of their respective parental magmas. The dykes pre-date the mobile belt and have chemical and mineralogical similarities with dykes of the same general age in southern West Greenland and Scotland. [W.S.W.]
