Summary:Barium aluminosilicates with composition BaH2Si2O8.nH2O (n = 0-1) crystallize metastably in hydrothermal experiments at < 600 degrees and 1-3 kbar. Their XRD powder patterns, composition, thermal behaviour and readiness to crystallize metastably suggest a crystal structure similar to those of natural cymrite, BaH2Si2O2.1H2O and synthetic hexacelsian, BaAl2Si2O8. The variation of cell dimensions with water content suggests that they form a crystallographically and chemically related series of compounds between the high-T phase hexacelsian and the high-P mineral cymrite in the system BaAl2Si2O8-H2O.
