Summary:A total of 1167 sites were sampled for water and stream sediments at a mean sampling density of one sample/300 km2. Peatlands and cultivated fields have a strong influence on the contents of Mn, Zn, Cu, Ni and As; humus acts as a complexing carrier for metals such as Al, Fe, Mn, Cu and Cr. A reciprocal partitioning was found for many metals between the stream waters and the stream sediments, i.e. if the concentrations are low in the stream sediments they are high in the stream waters, and vice versa. This is explained by the prevailing redox conditions in water-sediment systems and the abundance of complexing agents in water (e.g. humic substances). In catchments composed of arable land Cr seems to be trapped in clay-rich stream sediments although Cr concentrations in the water are small; in boggy catchment areas most of the Cr is in the water and it is low in the sediments.
